Wirepas, a global leader in IoT connectivity solutions, solidified its position as India’s most trusted smart meter connectivity provider at ELECRAMA 2025, the world’s largest electrical industry exhibition. With over 5 million smart meters deployed, Wirepas is enabling utilities across India with scalable, cost-effective, and ultra-reliable AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) solutions.

A significant milestone at ELECRAMA 2025 was the prestigious inauguration of the Wirepas booth (H7-B11) by His Excellency, the Ambassador of Finland Kimmo Lähdevirta, highlighting the strong Finland-India collaboration in energy innovation. The event also witnessed the unveiling of a groundbreaking end-to-end smart metering solution by Wirepas and HPL Electric & Power Ltd (HPL).

Wirepas & HPL Unveil India’s First Wirepas Certified In-Meter Gateway for RF Mesh

Wirepas and HPL introduced India’s first Wirepas certified in-meter gateway, a breakthrough technology eliminating the need for dedicated gateway devices in RF mesh-based smart metering. This integrated solution, demonstrated live at ELECRAMA, features:

  • An in-meter gateway embedded in HPL’s smart meters, powered by Wirepas Mesh Sub-GHz connectivity.
  • A dual-radio Network Interface Card (NIC) enabling a single smart meter to function as a gateway, transmitting data over 4G LTE while collecting meter readings from up to 300 smart meters.
  • Seamless integration with HPL’s Head-End System (HES), reducing infrastructure costs while ensuring 99.9% uptime.

This innovation revolutionizes India’s AMI landscape, particularly in areas with limited cellular connectivity, providing utilities with a cost-efficient, scalable, and ultra-resilient smart metering network.

“HPL has long-standing relationships with utilities across India. Many of them struggle with cellular coverage in AMI solutions. With the in-meter gateway, we ensure reliable connectivity while making installations as simple as that of a cellular smart meter,” said Rishi Seth, Managing Director of HPL.

“Wirepas has been supporting India’s ambitious smart metering rollout, with 5 million smart meters already deployed and thousands being connected every day. Our end-to-end RF mesh solution, combined with HPL’s high-quality smart meters, ensures seamless and future-proof operation for decades,” said Teppo Hemiä, CEO of Wirepas.

Unveiling India’s First Cloud-Based Prepayment Solution

Wirepas also showcased its collaboration with Anvil Cables Pvt. Ltd in deploying India’s first cloud-based electricity prepayment system. This revolutionary system, already operational in 500,000 meters across Assam and Kashmir, aligns with India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), allowing consumers to top up their electricity balance anytime, anywhere while ensuring financial sustainability for utilities.
