The growing complexity of embedded systems means designers today must face an increasing number of challenges. They are expected not only to deliver high performance and low power consumption but also advanced communication functions, hardware security, and short project implementation times. At the same time, cost pressures force the optimization of hardware platforms – especially in IoT devices, industrial automation, and consumer electronics.
The answer to these needs is the new STM32C5 microcontrollers and the STM32CubeMX2 environment, which aim to simplify the design process and accelerate application development. The manufacturer focused both on high computational performance and advanced security features, as well as improving the daily work of developers through new configuration tools and a more intuitive workflow.
New STM microcontrollers
New STMicroelectronics solutions now in the TME catalog
TME has expanded its offer with the new STM32C5 series – devices based on the Arm Cortex-M33 core and ST’s 40nm Flash technology. The products set new performance standards in cost-optimized projects. The microcontroller clocked at 144MHz achieves a performance ratio of 4.11 CoreMark/MHz. The Arm Cortex-M33 core was designed for IoT applications and embedded systems requiring effective security and efficient digital signal processing. The processor includes numerous optional features, including digital signal processing (DSP) extension, memory protection units (MPU), and a floating-point unit (FPU).
STM32C5 microcontrollers are based on the Arm Cortex-M33 core and are designed for IoT applications, industrial automation, and devices requiring advanced security features.
The series offers a wide choice of memory – up to 1024KB Flash and 256KB SRAM, which greatly exceeds typical standards for entry-level products. Devices are available in packages ranging from 20 to 144 pins. Beyond a wide range of GPIO ports and a rich analog set (including three AD converters), the microcontrollers are equipped with key peripherals such as: 10/100 Ethernet, OctoSPI, FDCAN, advanced hardware security features, and a flexible DMA controller for efficient data handling. These capabilities allow for a broad spectrum of uses – from entertainment and smart home systems to industrial automation.
New quality in design: the STM32CubeMX2 environment
STMicroelectronics elevates the design process by introducing the STM32CubeMX2 tool. It is built on the solid foundations of the proven STM32CubeMX but enhances existing features and introduces new solutions, providing greater performance, flexibility, and innovation right from the first version. This tool is dedicated exclusively to new STM32 series, starting with STM32C5. Its key features include:
- live code preview for faster prototyping,
- Highlight Path: clearer clock tree configuration,
- pinout table view: more efficient and transparent pin configuration,
- online documentation: direct access to the STM32CubeMX2 knowledge base,
- new pack manager: easy maintenance of project updates.
- Transition from HAL to HAL2
HAL2 is a peripheral drivers layer of the STM32Cube embedded software. It is based on the existing HAL library improving on usability and maintainability while preserving the same programming model and API style.
Why choose the STM32 ecosystem?
STM32 microcontrollers enjoy great popularity among developers and engineers due to their extensive portfolio offering high performance and reliability for various applications. Moreover, STMicroelectronics has developed a dedicated AI tool for STM32 solutions, which facilitates searching for information in technical documentation and manuals (Reference Manuals), making entry into the STM ecosystem easier than ever. A large user community provides access to ready-made solutions for many issues, and the manufacturer offers detailed tutorials, online training, and full documentation for each product series, enabling the full utilization of hardware potential.
