Murata Manufacturing has announced the launch and mass production of a new multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) featuring 15 nF capacitance, 1.25 kV rated voltage, and C0G dielectric, in a compact 1210 size (3.2 mm × 2.5 mm).
These capacitors are engineered for efficient power conversion and stable performance in high-voltage applications, including onboard chargers (OBCs) and high-performance consumer electronics power supplies.
The series provides designers with flexibility, offering capacitance options from 4.7 nF to 15 nF and tight tolerances of ±1% to ±5%.
In modern power electronics, resonant tanks and RC snubber circuits are essential for boosting efficiency and reducing voltage and current spikes. These circuits often operate under high voltages and currents, where even small shifts in capacitor performance can reduce efficiency, generate heat, or in extreme cases, cause system failure.
The C0G dielectric provides key advantages for these applications: low dielectric loss and highly stable capacitance across a wide temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, making it ideal for resonant and snubber circuits.
As power supplies increasingly adopt silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs for faster switching, higher efficiency, and greater power density, capacitors with breakdown voltages around 1.2 kV are required. Designers need components that maintain stability over wide temperatures, minimize power losses, and reliably handle high voltages.
Murata’s new 1.25 kV MLCC leverages the company’s proprietary ceramic and electrode materials, thin-layer forming, and precision stacking technologies to meet these demanding requirements, supporting the latest SiC MOSFET-based power designs.
