QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited announced that its technology has been selected by Medha Servo Drives Pvt. Ltd., a leading provider of rail automation and control technologies, as the software foundation for a next-generation railway protection system to be deployed across various monorail and metro rail projects throughout India.
At the heart of the deployment is Medha’s Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) solution, powered by the QNX OS for Safety to enable precise, real-time control of train operations. Designed for integration into a range of urban transit systems, the solution supports safe, efficient, and automated train movement across diverse rail environments.
Medha’s CBTC system is engineered to enable the safe and efficient operation of trains in metro rail environments through sophisticated automation and continuous communication. It enables coordination of train movements, optimizes headways, and reduces delays, ultimately enhancing operational performance and the overall passenger experience.
To meet the rigorous demands of EN50128 SIL 4 certification – the highest safety integrity level for railway signaling applications – Medha’s CBTC is powered by QNX OS for Safety which is pre-certified to IEC 61508 SIL3. This integration allows for compliance with international safety standards while delivering the reliability and fault tolerance required for modern rail infrastructure.
“We are proud to support Medha in delivering a next-generation CBTC solution for India’s rapidly evolving urban transit landscape,” said Dhiraj Handa, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Asia-Pacific at QNX. “Our software is built to meet the highest safety and reliability standards, and we’re excited to see it play a key role in shaping the future of public transportation across the country.”
“Our collaboration with QNX marks a significant step forward in modernizing India’s transit infrastructure,” said Arunachalam Agastian, General Manager – Signalling at Medha Servo Drives. “With QNX’s proven software foundation, we’re not just meeting safety and reliability benchmarks – we’re setting new standards for automation and control in urban rail. This deployment will help deliver a smarter, safer, and more efficient travel experience for millions of daily commuters.”
QNX OS for Safety has been deployed in rail systems around the world, including with South Korea’s KORAIL Metro, where it serves as the foundational platform for sTraffic’s unmanned train control system, and within Portugal’s national rail network, where Critical Software selected QNX to support a safety-critical railway protection system. These global implementations underscore QNX’s reputation as a trusted provider of high-assurance software for rail transportation infrastructure.
