STMicroelectronics has unveiled a compact thyristor gate driver tailored for space-constrained AC-powered consumer appliances such as hair dryers. The device incorporates a newly engineered isolation transformer, enabling slimmer and simpler circuit designs while meeting strict safety standards. It is aimed at helping manufacturers reduce board space without compromising reliability.
The STSID140-12 comes in a tiny 5.35mm × 3.45mm DFN package with a height of just 1.2mm. Despite its small size, it integrates an isolation transformer within the substrate, providing 1250V RMS insulation. This design ensures strong electrical isolation and dependable performance in compact layouts.
The driver also features high immunity to electrical noise, allowing designers to use smaller AC-input filter capacitors to comply with emission requirements. This reduces overall board area and lowers component costs. Its surface-mount DFN package supports automated assembly, eliminating manual wiring and simplifying production.
Thyristors, or silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs), continue to be a cost-efficient solution for household AC applications such as dimmers, heating systems, and motor-driven devices. Their simple triggering mechanism, natural turn-off behavior, and resilience to surge currents make them suitable for controlling both resistive and inductive loads with minimal external components.
The STSID140-12 supports zero-cross and phase-angle control modes, making it ideal for dimming and motor-speed regulation. It accepts a 3.3V logic input and delivers up to 40mA output current, enough to drive large thyristors, triacs, and solid-state relays. Additional protections include undervoltage lockout, high ESD robustness, and a 3.92mm creepage distance for enhanced safety.
To speed up development, ST offers the STEVAL-SID140V1 evaluation board, highlighting the compact design and reduced bill-of-materials advantages. The evaluation board is expected to complete qualification in Q2 2026. The STSID140-12 is already in mass production and available through authorized distributors and ST’s online store.
