xMEMS Launches XMC-1200 Solid-State Micro Fan

xMEMS Labs has unveiled the XMC-1200, a solid-state active cooling solution designed to tackle the growing thermal challenges of next-generation smart glasses. Built for AR, XR, and AI-powered wearable devices, the compact micro fan delivers targeted cooling to heat-sensitive components such as processors, microdisplays, and imaging systems within the limited space of eyewear designs.

Measuring only 46 mm², the XMC-1200 is small enough to fit into areas like smart glasses’ temple arms, where traditional mechanical fans are too large. When paired with xMEMS’ Astra2 driver ASIC, the device uses around 70 mW of power and can lower component temperatures by up to 10°C under a 1 W thermal load. This allows manufacturers to improve thermal performance while keeping power consumption low.

As smart glasses become more advanced with faster processors, brighter displays, cameras, and built-in AI features, managing heat has become a major design challenge. Higher processing demands create more heat, while manufacturers still need devices to remain lightweight, slim, quiet, and comfortable. Without proper cooling, companies may need to reduce performance, lower display brightness, or limit features such as extended video recording.

The XMC-1200 addresses these issues by cooling components directly at the source of heat. In AR and XR systems, better temperature control helps maintain display quality by improving the stability of LEDs and laser light sources, supporting consistent brightness, color accuracy, and contrast. For AI-based wearables, the cooling technology helps processors handle demanding tasks like computer vision, real-time translation, and voice-based applications without excessive thermal throttling.

Camera-equipped smart glasses can also benefit from improved heat management. By reducing temperatures around image sensors and processing hardware, the XMC-1200 can help extend recording durations and improve system reliability. Lower heat around areas that touch the user’s face may also make devices more comfortable during extended wear.

xMEMS is currently providing engineering samples of the XMC-1200 to selected customers under confidentiality agreements, with mass production planned for Q4 2027. The company also noted that its higher-performance XMC-2400 µCooling device has already entered volume production and is being used in early smart glasses designs.
