Artificial intelligence computing is rapidly increasing server power demand across data centers, enterprise infrastructure, and edge AI deployments. These trends are pushing conventional topologies to their limits and creating a need for novel solutions delivering high efficiency within constrained rack space and cooling limits. To address these challenges, Infineon Technologies AG is launching a 5.6 kW modular common redundant power supply (M-CRPS) reference design for enterprise servers and edge AI. The reference design targets an efficiency profile aligned with 80 PLUS Ruby and GB 20943-2025 standards, further expanding Infineon’s comprehensive portfolio for powering AI and enterprise servers. The solution helps developers shorten time-to-market while improving rack power density, efficiency, and thermal performance.

This PSU design reaches industry benchmark power density of 170 W/in³ in a compact M-CRPS 185mm form factor with a peak efficiency of 98+ percent. A three-level flying capacitor totem-pole PFC stage implemented with CoolSiC and CoolMOS devices targets a peak efficiency above 99+ percent. A compact half-bridge LLC and synchronous rectification stage operating at resonant frequency of ~350 kHz is enabled by CoolGaN devices. An integrated energy buffer provides a hold-up time of 12 milliseconds at full power while reducing volume occupied by electrolytic capacitors. Integrating resonant and magnetizing inductance into the transformer further reduces the need for separate magnetic packages, leaving more flexibility for component placement and airflow.

The PFC and LLC stages are digitally controlled to respond to demanding AI load transients. The programmable power control accelerator (PPCA), integrated into the PSOC Control C3 Performance Line microcontroller, supports precise current and voltage regulation with fast dynamic response. The reference design accepts 180–305 V AC or 240 V DC input and is therefore suitable for a range of global grid standards. It achieves low input-current total harmonic distortion (iTHD) and a power factor above 0.99 across most of the load operating range. The design delivers 54 VDC nominal output and supports operation at ambient temperatures from -5°C to 45°C.

Availability

The new 5.6 kW PSU will be showcased at the Infineon booth at electronica 2026 in Munich from November 10 to 13 (hall C3, booth 502).
