Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) has launched its SmartClamp series of protected DrMOS power stages, aimed at addressing the growing power demands of AI servers, data centers, and high-performance GPUs. These new solutions are engineered to provide highly accurate current protection, ensuring stable and safe operation even under intense and variable workloads.

The SmartClamp lineup integrates advanced over-current protection (OCP) and negative current protection (NCP) features, specifically designed to handle the rapid and extreme current fluctuations common in AI-driven applications. A key device in the series, the AOZ53228QI, is built to protect multiphase voltage regulators from current spikes, especially in situations where inductors are close to saturation.

In modern computing environments, especially AI workloads, sudden power spikes can exceed the limits of conventional power stages. Traditional protection methods may respond too slowly, allowing excess current to accumulate and potentially damage critical components like high-side MOSFETs. SmartClamp technology addresses this issue by embedding fast current-limiting directly into the power stage for quicker, more reliable protection.

The devices also feature cycle-by-cycle current sensing using an internal rising-edge current ramp, which enables continuous real-time monitoring of inductor current. This allows precise control of both positive and negative current events, even during highly dynamic switching conditions, improving overall system stability and protection in demanding applications.

Designed for broad compatibility, the SmartClamp DrMOS family works with standard industry controllers such as constant-on-time and fixed-frequency PWM systems, as well as AOS’s own multiphase control platforms. This makes it suitable for a wide range of uses, from AI servers to gaming PCs and other AI-enabled computing devices.

The product range includes several variants supporting different voltage and current levels, with capabilities of up to 80 A, making them well-suited for high-density power delivery systems where efficiency, reliability, and protection are essential.

Now available in production, the SmartClamp series offers designers a robust solution for managing the increasing power and performance demands of modern AI and high-performance computing systems.
