GlobalFoundries (GF) has completed its acquisition of the integrated voltage regulator (IVR) business from Austria-based Photeon Technologies. The deal, which was announced with GF’s latest quarterly earnings results, was finalized in July 2026. The companies did not disclose the financial details.

As part of the transaction, GF is adding Photeon’s proprietary IVR technology, engineering resources, and R&D capabilities to its power management portfolio. Photeon, known for its power, control, and sensor solutions, will retain its core design services and fabless semiconductor operations in Austria as an independent company. It will also continue working with GF on the further development of the technology.

The acquisition comes as semiconductor systems increasingly require more efficient power delivery. Conventional designs typically position voltage regulators on the printed circuit board (PCB), which can increase power losses and create routing challenges. IVRs instead combine key regulation components—including controllers, FETs, inductors, and capacitors—into a compact integrated solution. Placing voltage regulation closer to the processor can reduce power distribution losses, improve response to sudden load changes, and boost energy efficiency.

GF expects the technology to support growing demand for advanced power solutions in high-performance computing (HPC) and AI data centers. By incorporating IVR technology into its semiconductor offerings, the company can develop more integrated power solutions using monolithic and 2.5D/3D packaging approaches. The technology also complements GF’s existing silicon-on-insulator (SOI) and BCD manufacturing processes, giving customers options for smaller, more thermally efficient power management designs.
