The village of Modhera in Gujarat, famous for its Sun Temple, has become a symbol of India’s renewable energy transition by becoming the nation’s first fully solar-powered village. The project was implemented under the joint initiative of the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat, transforming the energy landscape for more than 1,300 households and multiple public institutions.
At the core of this initiative lies a combination of distributed rooftop solar systems and a centralized ground-mounted solar power plant integrated with battery energy storage. Each household in Modhera is equipped with Growatt MIC 1000 TL-X inverters, ensuring maximum energy conversion efficiency and stable grid-tied operation. For larger installations such as schools, community centers, and Panchayat buildings, higher-capacity Growatt MAC 60KTL3-X LV and MID 30KTL3-X inverters are deployed to manage substantial power demands while maintaining system stability and smart monitoring across the network.
Through this advanced hybrid setup, Modhera now generates and consumes clean solar energy around the clock. During the day, households and institutions draw power directly from their rooftop systems, while excess energy is stored in batteries or exported to the grid. At night, the stored solar energy continues to supply the village, ensuring uninterrupted power without dependence on fossil-fuel sources. This approach has eliminated power outages, significantly reduced electricity expenses for villagers, and established an effective model for energy self-reliance in rural India.
The environmental and economic impact of the project is remarkable. Collectively, Modhera’s solar installations generate an estimated 12–13 GWh of green electricity annually, offsetting around 8,000–10,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. Residents experience substantial cost savings on their electricity bills, while the village collectively benefits from lower grid dependence and improved energy security.
Growatt’s contribution has been central to the project’s success — offering reliable, efficient, and intelligent inverter solutions that ensure high system uptime and optimized energy yield. The deployment of Growatt’s residential MIC series and commercial MAC/MID series inverters demonstrates the brand’s capability to cater to diverse power needs, from small homes to large community infrastructures.
Modhera today stands as a beacon of sustainable development and a model for future smart energy villages across India. The project not only honors the legacy of the Sun Temple that symbolizes energy and light but also reflects India’s commitment to a cleaner and more self-sufficient future — with Growatt’s technology playing a defining role in making this vision a reality.
