EB: Power semiconductors are at the heart of electrification. How is Littelfuse driving innovation in this space to meet the growing demands from industries like EVs, renewable energy, and industrial automation?
Ralf: When we talk about electrification, we’re referring to a complete ecosystem, from milliwatts to megawatts. At Littelfuse, our focus spans the full power spectrum. We design and manufacture high-power thyristors, diodes, and press-pack IGBTs used in high-voltage DC transmission and distribution systems.
Our technologies play a crucial role across the energy chain, from generation and transmission to industrial and consumer applications. Whether it’s solar energy, electric vehicles, or power-efficient industrial systems, Littelfuse devices are designed to enhance efficiency and reduce energy consumption across all sectors.
EB: Wide bandgap technologies such as SiC and GaN are transforming the semiconductor landscape. What role does Littelfuse see these technologies playing in the future of power electronics?
Ralf: Wide bandgap semiconductors like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) are already reshaping power electronics. Silicon carbide, in particular, has become a standard in electric vehicles where maximum efficiency and performance are critical.
For us at Littelfuse, these technologies are important components of our portfolio, but what truly matters is how these chips are applied. It’s not only about the semiconductor itself it’s about integrating the technology into complete, optimized systems that meet customer needs. SiC and GaN will continue to be key enablers, especially in applications where efficiency and power density are essential.
EB: Reliability and efficiency are crucial in high-power applications. How does Littelfuse ensure long-term performance in demanding environments?
Ralf: Achieving both high efficiency and reliability often requires careful balance. For example, smaller semiconductor chips can offer higher efficiency due to lower losses, while larger chips may dissipate heat more effectively, improving reliability and longevity.
At Littelfuse, we perform extensive power cycling tests and detailed performance simulations to ensure each device meets the specific requirements of its intended application. We design every product as a complete system considering the chip, the package, and the thermal and electrical characteristics. This holistic approach ensures the right device is used for the right purpose, balancing performance, reliability, and lifetime.
EB: Sustainability and energy efficiency are global priorities. How are Littelfuse’s power semiconductor products contributing to greener technologies?
Ralf: Power semiconductors are the foundation of energy efficiency. A simple example is variable-speed motor drives used in industrial environments. By enabling precise motor control through inverters, we can significantly reduce energy consumption, which directly supports sustainability goals.
Beyond our products, Littelfuse is deeply committed to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental stewardship. Since 2019, we have achieved an 18% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and today, 71% of our global energy use comes from renewable sources. We’ve also reduced hazardous waste by 20% since we began reporting sustainability metrics. These are tangible steps toward minimizing our environmental footprint while enabling sustainable technologies through our products.
EB: Looking ahead, what are some of the biggest opportunities and challenges you foresee for power semiconductors, and how is Littelfuse positioning itself to address them?
Ralf: The future lies in application-specific devices, products designed for precise performance in targeted use cases. At Littelfuse, we’re developing high-voltage discrete devices and customized packaging solutions to meet specific customer and market demands.
For instance, our innovations in package design help reduce creepage distances and improve reliability in high-voltage environments. But technology alone isn’t enough, package design and interconnection technology are just as critical as the chip itself.
Another major differentiator for us is customer support. We work closely with all our customers, not only large OEMs but also smaller players, providing dedicated field application engineering support to help them optimize performance and bring products to market faster. This close collaboration is what truly sets Littelfuse apart.
